#Cove School 26 October

As part of our World Space Week celebrations, we took a group of Year 9 students to Cody Technology Park for an exciting day of STEM activities. Students had a fantastic, hands-on experience, taking part in a range of interactive workshops, including programming LEGO robots, exploring a vacuum chamber, and completing a time-lag space communication activity. The visit also gave students the opportunity to explore the many exciting career paths available within STEM, inspiring them to consider the possibilities for their own futures in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students also had the special opportunity to attend the unveiling of a plaque recognising Cody Technology Park’s involvement in the Beagle 2 mission. Thank you to Cody Technology Park for hosting us and providing such an inspiring and memorable day for our students!

Innovation Academy Day! We recently took a group of Year 8 students to Brooklands Museum for the annual Innovation Academy Day. Students took part in a series of interactive and engaging workshops, including an escape room challenge, a pit stop challenge and a highways roadwork activity. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to see how STEM subjects and the skills they develop in the classroom can transfer directly into the workplace. A big thank you to Brooklands Museum for hosting such an inspiring and enjoyable event. It was a brilliant day of learning, teamwork and innovation!

Safeguarding Sleepovers Navigating the safeguarding conversation around sleepovers requires balancing your child’s independence with strict safety practices. While sleepovers are a traditional rite of passage, statistics from child safety experts underscore why many modern parents approach them with caution: over 80% to 90% of child sexual abuse is committed by someone the child knows and trusts, and a significant amount of peer abuse happens during overnight stays. Safeguarding isn't about being controlling; it is about being an attentive, protective parent. You can frame this as a normal, healthy part of planning by dividing your approach into conversations with the host, conversations with your child, and an exit strategy.

Our Year 7 students enjoyed a fantastic team-building experience at Runways End Outdoor Activity Centre on Monday 12th October (Side 1 tutor groups) and Tuesday 13th October (Side 2 tutor groups). Students took part in a range of exciting, instructor-led activities, including team challenges, orienteering, outdoor climbing and archery or caving. These experiences provided a brilliant opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones, build new friendships and develop the essential character skills that help them thrive at secondary school. Throughout the activities, students were encouraged to demonstrate resilience, communication, teamwork and empathy, supporting one another and growing in confidence along the way. It was wonderful to see so many students embracing new challenges, encouraging their peers and putting our Cove values of Care, Character and Academic Excellence into action. A huge well done to Year 7 for making the most of this opportunity, and a big thank you to our staff for helping make the experience such a success!

Today, we celebrated the end of our first half term by raising money for "Show Racism the Red Card", with students enjoying a mufti/wear red day to show their support! ❤️ We would like to wish everyone a lovely half term break and look forward to welcoming our students back on Monday 2nd November. Year 7 Choir Competition! Yesterday, we held our annual Year 7 Choir Competition, and what a huge success it was! Every Year 7 class has been learning a different song in their music lessons this term, and yesterday they took to the stage to perform in front of the whole of Year 7 and our esteemed panel of judges. Mr Futcher and Miss Crocker were incredibly proud of all our Year 7 students. It takes real confidence and courage to stand on stage and sing in front of 150 people, and every class did themselves proud! The students sang loudly, enthusiastically and tunefully, delivering some truly fantastic performances. They were also fantastic audience members, showing respect, support and encouragement for all the other classes throughout the competition. It was wonderful to see them celebrating one another’s performances and cheering each other on! The standard was so high that our judges faced an incredibly difficult decision and ultimately awarded joint first place! Joint first place: 7E2 – with their beautiful and moving rendition of Only You, which gave Mrs Taylor goosebumps! 7O2 – with a fun-filled, enthusiastic performance of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious that had everyone smiling! Second place: 7E1 – with their energetic performance of Price Tag. Third place: 7O1 – with a fantastic two-part rendition of the challenging Do-Re-Mi. A huge well done to every student who took part. We were so impressed by the confidence, teamwork and enthusiasm shown by all four classes. You should all be incredibly proud of yourselves! Finally, a big thank you to our wonderful judges, Mr Bibby, Mrs Taylor and Miss Leedale, for taking on the very difficult task of choosing our winners! What a brilliant celebration of music, teamwork and Year 7 talent!

Remembrance Day is a very special day at Cove School and as part of our Service on Tuesday 10th November, if your child is in an armed cadet force or other similar organisation such as Scouts, they are welcome to wear their uniform on that day as a mark of respect. All other students should be wearing full school uniform.

We are proud to become a member of the ARC! The Attachment Research Community (ARC) is a charitable organisation set up in 2017 by virtual school heads, school leaders, psychologists, training organisations and academics, with a mission for ‘every school to be attachment and trauma aware’. ARC’s purpose is to support all schools and education settings to be attachment and trauma aware in their practice for the benefit of all members of the learning community and particularly the most vulnerable, by bringing together, sharing and celebrating best practice. Promoting mental health and well-being through Attachment & Trauma Aware approaches in education. As members of The Attachment Research Community, we support everyone’s attachment needs by: • Promoting inclusion and preventing exclusion • Developing effective strategies to support children and adults • Providing high quality training for everyone in our setting • Sharing our learning with the ARC network • Working safely and with supervision.

CSSEF Assembly! CSSEF recently came to visit Y7 and teach them about Deaf awareness and teach them some British Sign Language. It was a really fun and interactive session. Chloe’s and Sophie’s Special Ears Fund is a Deaf children’s charity based in Surrey, Hampshire, London and Berkshire. They have been in operation for over 10 years - they fund Wishes which can range from funding a cycle helmet that fits with Cochlear Implants, BAHA’s and Hearing Aids; to working with Schools for Deaf children to ensure they have the best accessibility to their education. Their aim is to brighten the lives of Deaf children through interventions & support at home and school. Please visit their website for more information: http://www.cssef.org.uk

Reminder of our Year 9 Information Evening tonight - This evening will provide an overview of the year ahead, including key dates and useful resources to support students’ learning and wellbeing. We will also introduce the GCSE option subjects available for study in 2027 and explain the options process, including important deadlines and the support available to help students make informed choices. These decisions will play an important part in shaping their future pathways into further education, training and apprenticeships. We look forward to welcoming you this evening, please come to the Main Hall (you can enter the Hall through the blue school gate to the right of Reception).

Post-16 Education Information Morning Yesterday, all of our Year 11 students took part in our Post-16 Education Information Morning, where they had the opportunity to hear from representatives from a range of local colleges and education providers. Students were able to meet the visiting representatives, learn more about the different opportunities available to them, and ask questions about their options for further study after Cove School. This is an important time for our Year 11 students as they begin to consider their next steps and make decisions about their future. We strongly encourage students to attend as many college open events as possible, giving them the chance to explore different courses, facilities and learning environments, and to gather the information they need to make informed choices as they begin the college application process. Cove School needs You! Remembrance Day is a very special day at Cove School and we want to always increase the number of people within our community that we recognise. If you are an ex-service person or you would like to remember someone special who fought in a war or was an ex-service person, please send details to us. We would like to know name, armed force, date of birth, what relation they are to you and any applicable information about their career. We will then hold them forever dear in our Roll of Honour.
