Curriculum Intent
We want pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, to be able to reason and to solve problems. Our curriculum embraces these National Curriculum aims, and provides guidance to help pupils to become:
Visualisers - we use the CPA approach to help pupils understand mathematics and to make connections between different representations.
Describers - we place great emphasis on mathematical language and questioning so pupils can discuss the mathematics they are doing, and so support them to take ideas further.
Experimenters - as well as being fluent mathematicians, we want pupils to love and learn more about mathematics.
Curriculum Implementation
The White Rose Curriculum is ingeniously structured to cater to a wide spectrum of learners, ranging from Early Years (ages 3–5), Years 1-11, Post 16, and Mixed Age. This comprehensive approach is divided into three distinct terms: Autumn, Spring, and Summer, each reflecting a progression in complexity and depth.
At Cove School there is a culture of remembering key skills embedded in the curriculum which will allow students to retrieve previously taught material through a variety of activities.
Each lesson will begin with a “Do Now” task. The task will consist of 4 questions. These questions are focused on retrieving knowledge from last lesson, last week, last term and last year. Through different methods of AfL gaps of knowledge are filled. The maths department has embedded a learning sequence to support the students with their learning. We follow a model of “I do” and “You do” this allows students to reflect on new material, check their understanding and clear up any misconceptions before they focus on their independent task. The teacher uses different methods such MWBs, modelling and questioning to check students understanding.
We formally assess students after each unit. These unit tests are marked, and feedback given to students. After marking the assessment, the teacher will address any misconceptions and mistakes made in the assessment. The students will then be given a DIRT task to practice the questions and clearing up any misconceptions they had from their assessment.
Curriculum Impact
Our Mathematics Curriculum is based on the White Rose overview, which is supported by the Department for Education and is in-line with the new curriculum. It provides all the elements that teachers need to teach mastery with confidence and to encourage children to share their understanding using mathematical vocabulary.
We measure the impact of our curriculum using the following methods:
-
Analysis of formative and summative assessments
-
Moderation of student work
-
Parental feedback such as parents’ evenings
-
Pupils' discussions about their learning through pupil voice
-
Book monitoring

Homework
All students must complete homework USING Sparx Maths
What is Sparx Maths?
Sparx Maths Homework is an online learning platform that creates personalised maths homework for students aged 11-16.
We believe that practice makes perfect, so each week, your child's teacher selects the topics that have been taught in class and we build a personalised set of questions to match your child's current level of understanding.
Our aim is for all children to strive for 100% completion of their homework.
By consistently using Sparx Maths, your child can build a solid foundation in maths and achieve their full potential.
How does Sparx Maths make sure difficulty levels are correct?
Our aim is to provide personalised, challenging and attainable homework that every child can complete each week.
We constantly monitor homework and listen to teachers, so we can match your child's understanding. Each question also has a short video tutorial to help your child if they are stuck.
By progressing through each homework on their own, with the support from you and their teacher when needed, your child will have the best opportunity to answer 100% of the questions correctly.
How can I help my child with their Sparx Maths Homework?
We believe your child can answer all of the questions correctly in their homework, but we know there may be times when they struggle, so how can you support your child with their homework?
Our top three tips for you and your child when using Sparx Maths...
- Encourage them to tackle it on their own
- Nudge them to use the support videos
- Suggest that they start early to give plenty of time for help if they need it.
Year 10 and year 11 homework is set on Dr Frost Maths with a focus on exam style questions and exam preparation.

For over 20 years the UKMT has been inspiring a love of problem solving through maths challenges and enrichment activities, delivered by hundreds of volunteers.
Course Outline and Structure – GCSE
Exam Board: Edexcel
Specification Code: 1MA1
The aims and objectives of the Pearson Edexcel GCSE (9–1) in Mathematics are to enable students to:
- Develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts
- Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
- Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions
- Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context
There are two tiers:
- Foundation tier - grades 1 to 5 available
- Higher tier grades – 4 to 9 available (grade 3 allowed)
How parents/guardians support
You can support your child’s progress in mathematics in the following ways:
1. Check in with them:
- Have they completed their homework?
- How are they finding lessons at the moment?
2. Ensure they have the right equipment. Every lesson, students should have all their equipment which includes a black pen, a red pen, protractor, compass, ruler, pencil, eraser, sharpener and scientific calculator.
3. Every student has the opportunity to go through all planned lessons at Cove by visiting the WhiteRose Maths homelearning webpage
All you need to do is click the link, select your year and choose the topic to study
There are many resources available to students, especially in their GCSE year, below are the best resources for students focussing on their GCSE course (alongside WhiteRose Maths lesson videos).
-
Dr Frost maths
All students have a log in for Dr Frost. The platform provides exam practise, topic videos, unit tests. Teachers have access to students attempts and test performance allowing all teachers to quickly provide focused help either in class or at the maths clubs.
-
MathsGenie
Maths genie is a free website designed by maths teachers. Here students can access free videos and past exam questions offering vital practise for student GCSE exams. Each topic is divided by potential grade helping students understand how successful they can be.
-
Onmaths
Onmaths is a free platform and allows students to try exam papers giving an estimated grade, as the student goes through the paper. We find, here at Cove, students are motivated to complete exam papers and beat their previous scores using this platform.
