Safeguarding Sleepovers

Navigating the safeguarding conversation around sleepovers requires balancing your child’s independence with strict safety practices.

While sleepovers are a traditional rite of passage, statistics from child safety experts underscore why many modern parents approach them with caution: over 80% to 90% of child sexual abuse is committed by someone the child knows and trusts, and a significant amount of peer abuse happens during overnight stays.

Safeguarding isn't about being controlling; it is about being an attentive, protective parent. You can frame this as a normal, healthy part of planning by dividing your approach into conversations with the host, conversations with your child, and an exit strategy.
