Level 2 Higher Projects Qualification (AQA)

The HPQ at Cove School is a highly competitive, optional qualification offered to a small number of Year 10 students through an application process. In special circumstances, we may also extend this offer to Year 9 students. Students who are selected to complete the HPQ are expected to be motivated, conscientious, and inquisitive; they must want to achieve a qualification in addition to their GCSE studies.

In the HPQ, students carry out research on a topic that they've chosen that isn't covered by their other qualifications, taking inspiration from something in class, or something entirely unrelated to their studies.

Throughout the HPQ, students develop a range of hard and soft skills, such as: putting together project proposals, completing research, presentation and communication skills, time management, and many more.

How the HPQ is organised/assessed:

• Projects are overseen by a project supervisor who guides their students through the process.
• Students will receive approximately 30 guided learning hours, undertaken as an extracurricular activity after school (one day a week);
• Students are expected to spend approximately 30 independent learning hours on their project;
• Students are assessed through: a review of the student’s production log and assessment record; a review of the project product; a presentation; a written evaluation.

In addition to being an excellent addition to applications for further education and boosting students’ CVs, the HPQ introduces students to the expectations of the Extended Projects Qualification which is offered at many Sixth Forms and Colleges. These qualifications are also highly regarded by universities and employers due to developing crucial study skills and encouraging initiative and independence.
