Berlin Trip 2016

Berlin1Berlin2

39 Year 11 students took part in a GCSE History revision trip to Berlin in February.  Students were able to visit many of the locations that saw some of Germany’s most dramatic events take place as well as enjoy the experience of being a tourist in a foreign city.  We had a walking tour of the city, went to the impressive 1936 Berlin Olympic stadium, visited Sachsenhausen concentration camp to learn more about the worst aspects of life in the Nazi dictatorship as well as the German Historical Museum which explained the rise of the Nazi State.  On the final day, we visited sections of the Berlin Wall that are still standing and the old Stasi prison of the East German secret police which helped us gain an understanding of the division of the city and life in a communist dictatorship.

A particular highlight was the evening visit to the German parliament building, the Reichstag, where we were able to walk to the top of its impressive glass dome and look out over the city at night. Students are to be congratulated on their exemplary behaviour and maturity. Airline staff, the hostel staff and our tour guides all commented on how impressed they were with the group who remained positive, engaged and energetic throughout. Not only did this visit help students revise key aspects of their GCSE History course, it also allowed Cove students to excel in a different environment. We are very proud of them all.

We’d also like to thank Mr Crook, Mr Crossley, Miss Carrington and Miss Liddon for giving up a few days of their half term holiday to accompany the trip!
